Geocache Description:

The Yellow Birch is at the border of the Preserve. It mixes well with Hemlock.

Betula alleghaniensis (Yellow Birch, also known as Golden Birch), is a species of birch native to eastern North America, from Newfoundland to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, southern Quebec and Ontario, and the southeast corner of Manitoba in Canada, west to Minnesota, and south in the Appalachian Mountains to northern Georgia.

The name "yellow birch" reflects the color of the tree's bark.[1]

The wood of Betula alleghaniensis is extensively used for flooring, cabinetry and toothpicks. Most wood sold as birch in North America is from this tree.

Yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis) is the most valuable of the native birches. It is easily recognized by the yellowish-bronze exfoliating bark for which it is named. This slow-growing long-lived tree is found with other hardwoods and conifers on moist well-drained soils of the uplands and mountain ravines. It is an important source of hardwood lumber and a good browse plant for deer and moose. Other wildlife feed on the buds and seeds.

Yellow birch lumber and veneer are used in making furniture, paneling, plywood, cabinets, boxes, woodenware, handles, and interior doors. It is one of the principal hardwoods used in the distillation of wood alcohol, acetate of lime, charcoal, tar, and oils.

The cache is a fair sized, camoed, "small" pill bottle with a snap cap. There's an arrow pointing to where to press up to open. The cap does not separate from the ring that holds it in place. Please make sure it's tight all around when you close it. There's a necklace in a snack bag for SWAG. If you trade, please put in something of similar volume, as it helps to keep the tiny log bag on top and easy to reach. No tweezers, please, they kill the plastic. The log is rolled and held together with a rubber band. Please put the rubber band on your finger while you log, so you can easily put it back after you have rolled the log again. Don't forget the tiny plastic bag. BYOP, please. As usual the cache is tied in.
