The New Westminster Museum’s long-term exhibitions concentrate
on the local history of New Westminster through a series of
displays including a 1876 Coach and an 1862 Queen Victoria Shawl.
Exhibition themes represent the cultural heritage of the Royal City
and include:
The New Westminster Story
An ongoing exhibit about the history of Western Canada's oldest
city (1859) also called the "Royal City".
New Westminster - some historic photos
An exploration of early New Westminster, past and present, is seen
through oversized aerial photographs and maps.
New Westminster May Day
The history of North America ’s longest running May Day celebration
from the first event in 1870 to the present is a big part of our
community history.
The New Westminster Archives is home to a diverse array of
documentary heritage that tells the story of New Westminster ’s
evolution from a colonial capital carved out of the forest to a
bustling city centre. Preserved for present and future generations
are archival records that document local organizations, businesses,
government, families and individuals for about 150 years.
The Archives houses over 8,000 historic photographs and over 5,000
maps, plans, diaries, letters, city records, oral histories and
reference files. (Information from New Westminster Parks and Rec
website)
