Geocache Description:

Nice walk in Crow Butte Park.
Please rehide better than you found it.

Note: Two containers present. Original was found after being replaced.

Crow Butte Entrance After doing Joosta Cache we decided this park needed another cache. No need to go off-trail but please hide the cache well to keep it from disappearing.

Important Note
Tne park is officially open from 03/15 to 10/15 each year -- If you have to walk in to the cache from the gate, it is about 2 miles, half that from the day use area or about 200 yards from RV space 28 (don't drive down into the group area).
Day-use fees (when the park is open) are $5.00 per vehicle. This cache can be done in less than 10 minutes from the car if park in an empty camping spot near the cache if you can sweet talk your way in without the fee. Joosta Cache will take much longer.

From the Crow Butte web site:
Management
In 2003, Washington State Park’s Commission closed several Eastern Washington parks, including Crow Butte, due to budget shortfalls. The Crow Butte Park Association successfully bid on the lease of the park from the US Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the park. The Crow Butte Park Association is a non-profit organization, comprised of local business and civic-minded community leaders. The Crow Butte Park Association is working to transform Crow Butte Park into a centerpiece for the local and surrounding communities, as well as a destination for visitors to the area. Crow Butte Park is one of the stops on the historic Lewis and Clark Trial.

Features
The park is situated on the historic Lewis and Clark Trail. Crow Butte is a 1,312-acre camping park with 33,910 feet of freshwater shoreline. Crow Butte is popular with windsurfers and 1000's of migratory birds. In fact, this unique environment has sometimes been referred as the "The Maui of the Columbia". The site's recreational features include 50 RV & tent campsites with full hookups available, boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming.

History
When homesteading began in the area in 1850, the Crow family was one of the first to come west. The site of their homestead is now under the waters of the nearby John Day Reservoir, but many of their descendants live in the vicinity. During a 1941 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers survey, the name "Crow Butte" was assigned to the area. The park officially opened in April, 1977. Prior to being an island, Crow Butte was a hill. In the 1970s, when John Day Dam was built and flooded the Columbia River, waters formed around Crow Butte, turning it into the island it is today.

Fees
Daily boat launch fees and day-use fees are $5.00 per vehicle for 2007. The park takes reservations for the 50-site full-hookup campground, and can reserve picnic areas for group functions. Weekends and holidays are already filling up. You can make a reservation by calling the park office at (509) 875-2644. The park also offers two boat ramps, a boat basin with docks, and a large day use facility with swimming beach. Popular activities include picnicking, hiking and fishing.
