El lugar donde se asienta el
pueblo de Alfacar, en la ladera de la Sierra de la Alfaguara , fue
hace 20 millones de años un trozo de playa de lo que es hoy la
cuenca del Guadalquivir. Hoy día, se puede comprobar cómo, en la
zona conocida como "el caracolar" donde se sitúa una
urbanización con el mismo nombre, se encuentra al descubierto un
trozo de esa playa de hace 20 millones de años con sus arenas
petrificadas. Es perfectamente visible desde el camino que va de la
Fuente Grande al pueblo de Viznar.

Respecto a la formación de la
Sierra de la Alfaguara y su relieve, tenemos que remontarnos a
principios de la Edad Terciaria para encontrarnos con la respuesta.
Siguiendo las palabras de Gil Benumeya, R.; a principios del
Terciario ocurrieron grandes movimientos telúricos que configuraron
la forma actual de la Península Ibérica, formándose Sierra Nevada y
los Pirineos dentro de la Orogenia Alpina.

La Era Terciaria se caracteriza
