Victor Westhoff
Geboren in Oost-Java in 1916 volgde hij zijn opleiding vegetatiekunde aan de Frans-Zwitserse school van Josias Braun-Blanquet in Montpellier. Hij promoveerde en specialiseerde zich in plantengemeenschappen langs kuststreken. Hij was werkzaam als hoofd van de afdeling landschapsverzorging van de ANWB, wetenschappelijk medewerker bij de landbouwuniversiteit te Wageningen, hoofd van de afdeling botanie en plaatsvervangend directeur van het Rijksinstituut voor veldbiologie en natuurbehoud en werd hij hoogleraar aan de Katholieke universiteit Nijmegen. Ook adviseerde en stimuleerde hij het bestuur van Landschap Overijssel om het natuurgebied ‘Dal van de Mosbeek’ aan te kopen. Een behoorlijk indrukwekkend cv dus! Meet the man:
Natuurbeheer
Westhoff schreef verschillende boeken over vegetatiekunde en natuurbehoud, en ook werd hij actief binnen de Nederlandse Jeugdbond voor Natuurstudie. Deze bond was het oneens met de toenmalige lijn van de vereniging Natuurmonumenten, die uitging van economische exploitatie van natuurgebieden die zij in beheer hadden. Westhoff speelde een belangrijke rol in het duidelijk maken dat de natuurgebieden in Nederland vaak gebonden zijn aan oude vormen van agrarisch beheer. Daardoor werd de ‘klassieke natuurvisie’ ontwikkeld, die tot ver in de jaren 70 dominant bleef. Hieronder het drieluik “Wilde Planten”, een werk van Westhoff dat tussen 1970 en 1973 verscheen. Er werden meer dan 100.000 exemplaren verkocht!
Meijendel
Het natuurgebeid Meijendel wordt beheerd door Dunea, en is een waterwingebied. Ter bescherming van deze waterwinning zijn grote delen afgesloten voor het publiek. Daardoor werd het een gebied waar onder andere vogels alle vrijheid hadden om lekker hun gang te kunnen gaan. De oudste vogelwerkgroep van Nederland is dan ook actief binnen dit gebied, deze kijken sinds de jaren 50 naar de vogelstand in dit gebied. Bezoekerscentrum
In 2012 werd het bezoekerscentrum “De Tapuit” feestelijk geopend door Prins Willem-Alexander en Prinses Máxima. Niet raar dat er dan ook een Multi is ontstaan met dezelfde naam, een ware aanrader! De Tapuit Deze Multi voert je onder andere langs een andere cache van ons team! Maar als je geen Multi wilt lopen, is het bezoekerscentrum een prima startpunt voor een wandeling door het gebied, en krijg je er meer informatie. Er lopen verschillende kleine en grote wandelroutes door het hele gebied. Een aanrader is misschien ook wel een pannenkoekje in de pannenkoekenboerderij. Deze is iets verderop te vinden, en hier een foto uit 1930.
Within The Netherlands, one can find seven of these statues. The statues have been placed to commemorate Victor Westhoff. He was an authority within vegetation science and the protection of nature in the middle of the last century. In this beautiful area one can find even more caches, and maybe the area wouldn’t be so beautiful if it wasn’t for this man!
Victor Westhoff
Born in East-Java, Indonesia, in 1916, he was taught vegetation science at the French-Swiss school of Josias Braun-Blanquet in Montpellier, France. He promoted and specialized in plant communities along coastal areas. He was head of the department of landscaping of the ANWB (a Dutch tourist organization), scienist at the agricultrural university of Wageningen, head of the department of botany and vice president of the Dutch National Institute of Fieldbiology and Nature Preservation and became a professor at the catholic university of Nijmegen. He also advised and stimulated the board of the organisation of Landschap Overijssel to buy the nature preserve ‘Dal van de Mosbeek’. Overall, a quite impressive resume! Meet the man:
Nature Protection
Westhoff wrote a few books on vegetation science and the protection and preservation of nature. Also, he was active in the the Dutch youth union for studies of nature. This union had a different few on nature preservation then the ‘Natuurmonumenten’organisation. This larger organisation had many areas, but operated them commercially. Westhoff played a vital role in making them understand that in The Netherlands, nature is often mixed with old ways of agricultural use. Because of that de ‘classic nature vision’ was develloped, a vision that dominated untill the 1970’s. Underneath the trilogy ‘Wilde Planten’ (Wild Plants), a work by Westhoff, which he wrote between 1970 and 1973. Over 100.000 books were sold!
Meijendel
The area is called Meijendel, and is operated bu Dunea, and is also a catchment. To protect this catchment, larger areas are closed off to the public. Because of that, birds have the complete freedom to do their thing. The oldest bird-watching group of The Netherlands is active within this area, they’ve been watching birds in this area since the 1950’s. Visitors Center
In 2012, the visitors centre ‘De Tapuit’ was inaugurated by Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima. It’s not weird that a Multi has been created with this same name, ‘De Tapuit’, a recommendation to do this Multi! De Tapuit This Multi takes you through the area, and along another traditional cache by our team! But if a Multi is not your cup of tea, the visitors center is a great start for a walk as well. A number of larger and smaller routes are set out throughout the area. Another recommandation is a visit to go for a bite at the pancakefarm. This can be found near the visitors center, and has been there for ages. Here’s a picture of how it was back in 1930.
