Ebbe und Flut mitten im Land
Ebb and flow in the middle of the country
Die Soeste kann schon für Verwirrung sorgen. Mehrmals täglich ändert sie ihre Fließrichtung. Wie ist das möglich?
Der Fluss wird direkt von den Gezeiten der Nordsee beeinflusst. Viermal am Tag wechseln Ebbe und Flut einander ab, und genauso oft wechselt die Soeste ihre Fließrichtung. Allerdings treffen Ebbe und Flut in Barßel mit einer Zeitverzögerung ein, denn sie müssen sich ihren Weg von der Küste flussaufwärts bahnen. Der Unterschied im Wasserstand zwischen Niedrigwasser und Hochwasser, der sogenannte Tidenhub, ist hier im Binnenland noch so groß, dass man ihn sehr gut an den Brückenpfeilern im Uferbereich erkennen kann.
Umgangssprachlich wird oft von Ebbe und Flut als niedrigsten und höchsten Wasserstand gesprochen. Richtigerweise bezeichnet die Ebbe aber den gesamten Zeitraum, in dem das Wasser sinkt. Anders herum herrscht Flut, solange das Wasser steigt.

However, take the tides in Barßel with a time delay, because they must make their way upstream from the coast. The difference in water level between low water and high water, the so-called tidal range is here in the interior still so big that you may know him very well to the piers along the banks.
