Geocache Description:

Congrats to bERT97, CM_Ranch and RALPH for FTF! Most people don't know what legal marker are in the water ways.  White poles in waterways mark land leased by the State of Virginia as oyster leases.  Persons leasing these areas may legally plant and harvest oysters from the area.  It is illegal for other persons to take oysters in these areas.  Oyster farms are one key in the restoration of the bay's ecology.

Oysters in the bay are down to only 2% of the population originally estimated at the time of Captain John Smith's explorations. Oyster shells retrieved from dry wells at Jamestown are reported to be over 10" in size, while today's oysters are rarely over 5". Restoration of the bay will require almost complete removal of the use of fertilizers and insecticides, a job which is not possible if we want to sustain our current food supply with the use of current technology. It would also require almost the complete cessation of the harvest of shellfish from the bay, putting a substantial amount of people out of work. Oyster farms are one key in the restoration of the bay as only those oysters that are planted are harvested, no wild oysters are taken. Oysters are the main filter for the bay, continuously removing many of the pollutants from the water. The whole cache container can be completely removed and opened. Inside is a water resistant container. Please don't get the cache log wet. The cache is in a difficult spot to reach, unless you have long arms. If you can't reach it, please come back later with the proper tools, do not damage the pole as it is a legal marker placed by the owner of the lease who kindly gave permission for placement. DO NOT SPEAK TO NEIGHBORS ON THE RIGHT IN THE HOUSE AT THE LANDING! THEY ARE VERY MEAN PEOPLE WHO WILL MUGGLE THE SITE IF YOU LET THEM KNOW. The owners on the left with the tall fence are very nice, but as you would normally show courtesy, please do not walk ashore anywhere except the public landing. These are the owners of the oyster lease and have given permission for cache placement. The landing extends from the 'End State Maintenance' sign into the water between the fences. You can reach the cache at low tide when there is typically less than 12" of water for over 600' out into the river, if you come at a different tide, bring a kayak or canoe as only hand launched boats can reach this site. You will not be able to access the site by motorboat except at near high tide because it IS shallow! Wear swimming trunks and water shoes so you don't cut your feet on shells, though the bottom is sandy clay for 98% of the wading. BRING A WORKING PEN TO LOG IN!
