An oasis in a sea of black lava.
A kīpuka is an area of land surrounded by one or more younger lava flows. A kīpuka forms when lava flows on either side of a hill, ridge, or older lava dome as it moves downslope or spreads from its source. Older and more weathered than their surroundings, kīpukas often appear to be like islands within a sea of lava flows. They are often covered with soil and late ecological successional vegetation that provide visual contrast as well as habitat for animals in an otherwise inhospitable environment.
This geocache is located just pass the 28 mile marker on highway 200, the Saddle Road.
Parking can be found in a short "driveway" that marks the powerline road. You will walking on a smooth pahoehoe lava field, although not as rough as a'a, please be aware of deep holes and loose rocks in the area. The kipuka will stick out like a island in the black lava. Here you will encounter huge cracks on the surface so be careful. Yellow flowers, Baby ferns, and ohia trees are just some of the things you will see here
Please place the cache back exactly as you find it, practice CITO when possible and PLEASE NO SPOILERS! Enjoy the views...aloha and happy caching. Mahalo to Hiloshell & Del.....FTF! Evil isn't it?
