Geocache Description:

English description

As its name indicates, the Gorenjska region is distinguished by mountains (gore means mountains). People of Gorenjska have always lived in close connection with mountains, which is evident from their culture and their past, preserved in museums. Stories from the mountains are a part of the history we share, which can be found in the museums.

Škofja Loka Museum presents Lubnik mountain and items of the Copper Age, Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik introduces Alpine dairy farming and life at Velika planina, Tržič Museum highlights the ski competition at Zelenica, Museum of Apiculture in Radovljica presents breeding stations which are located on the way to the Roblekov dom mountain hut on Mt. Begunjščica, Museum of Gorenjska in Kranj pays tribute to the 40th anniversary of the first Slovenian ascent of Mount Everest, the preparation of which took place at Jošt mountain in Kranj, the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana with its exhibition Mountain Paradise invites visitors to reflect upon our past and present attitude to mountains, which can be internalized on Golica mountain. By May 2020, mountains and museums will become a cache of adventure!

Roblek pod Begunjščico

Begunjščica is the seventh mountain of the southern Karavanke mountain chain which exceeds 2000 metres. The highest peak of its ridge is 2060 metre high. At the feet of its northers walls is the Završnica valley, and in the direction of the Zelenica mountain pasture, there is the breeding station of Anton Janša Zelenica – the central area for the preservation of the Carniolan bee. The path that leads past the breeding station, takes hikers all the way to the mountain hut Roblekov dom. In the olden days, the mountain was known for manganese ore mining and cattle grazing, while today it is full of enthusiastic mountaineers.

The first hut on Begunjščica was named after Dr. Janko Vilfan, a lawyer from Radovljica and the then president of the Radovljica branch of the Slovene Mountaineering Society. It was built in 1909, but on a location a bit lower than today. In 1933, a new hut was built in the present place and named after Hugo Roblek (1871-1920), an initiator of mountaineering in Gorenjska, who died tragically in the fire arson attack on the Trieste National Hall.
