Cill Mhuire, Na Minna is one of three churches in the Parish of An Spidéal (Spiddal). This small church was originally the parish primary school which was a two-classroom structure in which a married couple taught the two classes.
At that time mass was also celebrated in the building, until it became the church in the mid 1950s when the new school building was developed on the other side of the road alongside the church.
This school operated for less than twenty years, and local children now go to An Tulach, (Tully) the next and most westerly parish in Inverin. That school building is still used as an Irish College during the summer months for visiting secondary school students.
Mass is celebrated in the Irish language here at 6pm on Saturdays, and the priest is shared with adjoining small parishes in the diocese so would be celebrating mass elsewhere on Sunday mornings. There was a small local shop adjoining the church, but the elderly couple who operated it decided to retire when the euro coinage was introduced in 2002, and the facility is now only opened as a tuck shop for the Gaeltacht students in summer months.
Please take care at this junction as there have been fatal accidents here in the past and the church boundary wall contains a requiem plaque in memory of a local lady killed here a few years ago.
Parking is available at the back of the church and can be accessed from the side road at Cartronkeel rather than the main road. Please use stealth and replace the cache carefully!
