Although settlers have been living in this area since 1800, it wasn't known as Clarksville until 1817 and didn't receive a city charter until 1850. Clarksville's river location served it well in the late 1800s when it's population hit an all time high of 1600 in 1880.
Clarksville is home to Lock and Dam 24 which provides an ideal vantage point to view river boat and barge traffic. It is also one of the largest winter migrating areas for the bald eagle. Eagle watching draws many tourists to town during the winter culminating in the annual Eagle Days festival held on the last weekend of January.
Clarksville also hosts a small artist colony. An antique dealer and furniture maker also operate businesses here. In 2006 the population was 490.
I hope you enjoy your visit to this historical town.
