Geocache Description:

Micro cache with clear tub and colourful lid.

Found on a worn track in the Rising Sun Country Park below what was once a peat heap.

The Rising Sun Country Park
A site in Benton that once housed one of the world’s largest coal mines, has been given a new lease of life following an official opening by the Duke of Northumberland in October 2003.

The Rising Sun Country Park is a 400 acre natural green oasis set in the heart of North Tyneside, it boasts an Organic Farm, Nature Reserve, Countryside Centre, numerous ponds, woodlands and extensive area of grasslands. As well as being a wildlife haven the Country Park provides people with a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Country Park is actively promoting healthy living, it provides a resource for healthy outdoor activities, healthy food and encourages sustainable practices. The wildlife within the Country Park is rich and diverse. The Park is a site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI) and the lake is designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR).

For walkers, cyclists and horse riders there is an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways. There is also a permanent Orienteering Course.

The Country Park has a rich and interesting heritage. It was once the site of a coal mine and an isolation hospital for infectious diseases. Much of this has long since disappeared and when you discover the beauty of the park; it is hard to imagine what has gone on before.Educationally the Country Park offers children, young people and adults the opportunity to experience for themselves the wonders of nature, rather than finding them out from secondary sources. In the Country Park the environment is regarded as a stimulus and a resource that can support many curriculum subjects. Whatever topic is chosen for study, it will be approached creatively, individuals learn through participation and investigation. Play opportunities are also provided during school holidays based on environmental awareness raising activities.

The restaurant provides employment and training to adults with learning difficulties. The restaurant serves freshly prepared, cooked to order food that is well presented, using locally sourced produce and caters for internal and external customers.

The newly built Countryside Centre commands a beautiful view facing south over the Country Park and open countryside. Within the Centre is the restaurant and exhibition room.
The open south facing lawns make a delightful picnic site where picnic benches are provided, not far from the car parking. A play area is available for children to enjoy and a wildlife garden is being developed.

The Rising Sun Farm extends to 175 acres, produces organic food for the local community and provides livery facilities for local horse owners. There is also a selection of small animals for visitors to see. The farm has a social and educational role. It has a thriving day service for people with learning difficulties.
