Seinfeld needs little introduction - the top rated comedy on the air during its nine memorable seasons, winner of Emmys and Golden Globes and other awards galore, still a monstrous powerhouse in syndication a decade later. Starring Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards, it was ostensibly about "nothing", yet it resonated with millions of viewers every week. TV Guide named it the single greatest television show of all time, period.
Many, many, many television shows take place in New York, but Seinfeld is on the short list for which the City is not so much a setting as a leading character. Anyone who has spent time in New York can appreciate the reality behind the humor... The frustrations of the subway. The parking space battles. The absurdity of the Hamptons. And trying to get crosstown during the Puerto Rican Day Parade has reduced countless grown men to tears.
This cache takes you to the exterior shot used for Seinfeld's mainstay fictional diner, Monk's Cafe. Although it often served as a backdrop as the gang discussed their predicaments and misadventures, it also drove the plots of several episodes. In "The Gum", George accuses a waitress of absconding with his $20 bill, and in "The Pilot Part Two" Elaine sparks an investigation of Monk's for employing only buxom waitresses. Most famously, of course, Monk's Cafe is the where "The Contest" was born...
