Geocache Description:

This is an easy, family-friendly cache located within the loop trail behind the Russell Colbath Historical Site, Kancamaugus Highway, Albany, New Hampshire. Site is about 12 miles west of Conway, next to the Jigger Johnson Campground. Easy walk on a half-mile, hard-packed, mostly level path. Cache is just off the trail; please note that this trail is not wheelchair accessible. Educational signs along path. There is access to the cold, wide, and shallow Swift River halfway through the walk.

Parking is at the lot next to the Russell Colbath Historical site on the Kancamaugus Highway, Albany, New Hampshire. Please note this is a flat fee area ($3/ day as of August 2010; includes all sites along the Kancamaugus for the day). Enter the trail from the lot and walk towards the Russell Colbath house, following the trail signs. Pass the barn and take a right onto the trail behind the barn. The trail makes a complete loop, coming back to the barn.
Take time to read the educational signs posted along the trail, especially the one near the river; it helps you visualize where the train tracks used to run, and during very low water you can see the scant remains of the bridge supports. The Swift River can be accessed down a steep drop about half way through the hike; the river is wide and shallow, and a nice place for wading. This is a good moose-sighting area, especially if you sit a while on one of the sandbars in the river. Don’t forget to tour the Russell Colbath house after your hike, if it is open; it’s a first-rate piece of preserved history.
Coordinates given are plus or minus 18 feet, because of the heavily wooded area. There is a letterbox near our cache, so make sure you don't confuse one for the other. Check the hint if you need more info; it gives very specific information on the location of the cache. Please note... carefully look at the trinkets you take from the box! If it's a geocoin or other trackable item, please be sure to log the fact that you took it! Thanks and have fun.
