Geocache Description:

A walk following the Sarn Helen Route.

Sarn Helen was a Roman Road in Wales, running from Aberconwy in the north to Carmarthen in the south.

It was some 160 miles in length. Today some sections are modern highways, others still traceable as Roman though much degraded, and at various places there is much debate as to where the road ran.

This section of what is called the Sarn Helen leads north-eastwards from Neath (Roman 'NIDVM') to Banwen at the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. (visit link)

Thanks to Wikipedia.

My intention is to place a series of caches along the Sarn Helen route from Aberdulais to the National Park Visitor Centre (visit link) within the Brecon Beacons.

I have placed the caches in this way but the route can be followed in reverse order or can be reached from the sides of the valley at various points.

Also along this route is another geocache (Saints and Soldiers) although this is a premium member cache only.

It is possible to obtain a bus service between the start (Aberdulais) and the end (Banwen), bus number 158.

This section can be followed in its entirety and I would advise that anybody attempting the route wears suitable footwear. Some of the route is used by 4x4 drivers and as such has been churned up and during bouts of heavy rain can be very wet under foot.

On a good fine day views can be had north into the Western Area of the Brecon Beacons.
