The parking & numbers for this series are only suggestions. To reach the suggested parking & starting point use the road to Logie from the A92 rather than the single track potholed Quarry Road from Balmullo.
From the parking, (by cache, GC2T6HE) the track through the gate is signposted.
Lucklaw Hill
To the north of the village of Balmullo is Lucklaw Hill, at 626 feet (191 m) above sea level, it marks the eastern extremity of the Ochil Hills. Dominating the landscape of north-east Fife it is clearly identifiable from a distance thanks to the giant pink scar on its’ southern flank caused by ongoing quarrying. Yes, Lucklaw Hill is the home of those rough pink chuckies, known as Balmullo chips, seen on paths and driveways up and down the country.
The summit of Lucklaw Hill offers fabulous 360° views to the south and west over Fife and beyond to Perthshire; east to the Eden estuary, Leuchars, Tentsmuir and St Andrews; north to Dundee, the Sidlaws and beyond to the southern Cairngorms.
The caches round Lucklaw hill are all placed on or near to paths or rough tracks round the hill. Many of these paths form part of Fife council’s core paths network (look for the direction posts with purple markers) and/or are clearly signposted as rights of way. Terrain varies from flat to a reasonably steep climb through a grassy field, often used for grazing. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground can be muddy or wet and boggy in places. If taking dogs or young children please be aware that you may come across livestock and warnings to keep dogs on a leash – especially when there are lambs or calves about. Some parts of the route pass areas where there may be pheasants and other ground nesting birds, whilst other parts are used for mountain biking, horse riding, dog walkers and runners. There is a house owned by the Girl Guides which is used for residential stays/camps towards the Balmullo side of the hill, and many “dens” or woodland shelters can be found in the woods near here.
