Geocache Description:

A Visit to Sir Harry Burrard Neale Monument at Walhampton, east of Lymington.

The Cache with room for a few swaps plus Coins & Travel Bugs) is hidden within view of this monument, therefore a quick cache and dash, but please find time to read the plaques on the monument. There is ample free parking at the road corner by the monument. at N 50 45 702 W 001 31 777 The Solent Way Walk come pass the way. The Burrard Neale Monument or sometimes know as The Walhampton Monument, comprises of a massive stone stepped plinth, surmounted by 75 foot high tapered obelisk. Each of the four faces of the base has a large iron plaque giving a fairly lengthy account of Sir Harry Burrard Neale's life in wildly varying type sizes. He was born in 1765 and died at the age of 74 in 1840 and is buried in Lymington Church. He held the office of member of Parliment for Lymington at differnt times between 1790 to 1835. he gained the office of Lord of the Admiralty between 1804 and 1807, and the rank of Admiral of the Royal Navy in 1810. he was invested as Knight Commander and Knight Grand Order of the Bath in 1815 and 1822 repectively, the the Knight Grand Cross in the Order od St Michael and St Georgein 1824. In 1825 he became Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet of the Royal Navy. During his naval career he saw a considerable amount of action and under his orders 20 enemy ships of war were destroyed. Many have seen the top of this the top of this obelisk sticking out of the trees on the east side of the Lymington river, the base is found near a right-angle in Monument Lane.
