Geocache Description:

35mm Film Container. Enter Maryville from either Golf or Des Plaines/River Road and park near the cache.

Each year, tens of thousands of mostly Latin-American Catholics decend upon a shrine in Des Plaines on December 12 to celebrate the feast or Our Lady of Gauadalupe. They come bearing roses and candles to lay at the feet of Mary at her shrine.
The feast is a commemoration of Mary’s appearance to St. Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill near modern- day Mexico City in year 1531.
Many pilgrims bring tributes of roses in recognition of the virgin’s miracle more than 400 years ago. The shrine in Des Plaines was built in the 1980’s and given official status by the Archdiocese of Mexico City. As December 12 nears, the celebration gets larger, with food, music, torch runs, and dance. To read more, visit the official web site www.madredeamerica.org or read this: (visit link)

The cache is a 35mm film container, very close to the shrine. Parking can be had very close by, but don’t even try to get there near December 12 as you will meet up with near 100,000 parishioners.
