Toskal-lake is very beautiful lake in the wilderness area of Lappland in Finland. Traveling to the place is demanding. Direct distance to the road is 30 kilometers and there are many mountains, rivers and lakes between.

Karstland is a rare natural formation in Finland. The largest and the thickest Finnish dolomite deposit is in Toskaljärvi. The thickness of the dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) is up to 40 meters in the eastern side of the lake.
The only and the longest (of course) Finnish underground river has been born to the amphitheatre like valley of Toskaljärvi. In this area you can hear the sound of the running water from underground. In this case you can find the beginning and the end of the underground river very clearly. There is not enough space for the water at spring time, so it overflows and takes its own way to the lake.
In the study ”Kilpisjärven ja Haltin kartta-alueiden kallioperä”, Jyrki J Lehtovaara 1995, mentions the length of the river as 200 meters.
In the book “Suomen luonnon ihmeitä”, Risto Lounema 2001, mentions the length of the underground river as over 100 meters.
The place is worth of visit. Be prepared for all kinds of weather, useless phone and demanding geography. You can come or go to Toskal from south, Meekonjärvi (autiotupa), thru two wadings. Area is quite flat and easy to walk. From south of Pihtsusjärvi the hike goes through some slopes, stony and rocky areas (rakka). If weather is fine and a walker in a good condition, it is possible to walk the route Meekonjärvi – Toskaljärvi – Pihtsusjärvi during one day. Of course, you can inquire after aeroplane or helicopter flights.
Your task is to find
- coordinates for the place the river goes underground
- coordinates for the place the river comes to daylight
- direct length of the underground river based on coordinates
- difference of the degrees of the underground river and the overflow (angle between the rivers). You can find the overflow even if it would be dry.

It is clear that posting picture with the log is optional, but all hikers like if you take one or more pictures. Maybe one of you and your GPS together with one or the other end of the underground river (see example photo) and attach it with your log.
Don’t attach any hints or photos with possible answers to your log. However it would be interesting to hear something about your trip and the weather.
Toskaljärvi is very beautiful and well known fishing place, especially and only for fishing arctic char.

Toskaljärvi on upea järvi Käsivarren erämaa-alueella. Huomioi, että järvelle ei mene merkittyä reittiä ja erämaa on vaativa paikka kulkea. Suora etäisyys tielle on 30 km ja välillä on paljon tuntureita, jokia ja järviä.

Karstimaa on harvinainen luonnonmuodostelma Suomessa. Laajin ja paksuin kalkkikiviesiintymä on Toskaljärvellä. Kalkkikiveä on jopa 40 metrin vahvuudelta järven itäpuolella.
Suomen ainoa maanalainen joki on muodostunut tähän upeaan amfiteatterimaiseen laaksoon. Kivien alla voi kuulla veden virtaavan monin paikoin käsivarren alueella, mutta tämä on selkeästi maan alle menevä ja sieltä esiin tuleva joki. Keväisin kaikki vesi ei mahdu tunneliin ja se tulvii omaa tietään (ylivuoto-uoma) läheiseen järveen.
Tutkimuksessa ”Kilpisjärven ja Haltin kartta-alueiden kallioperä”, 1995, Jyrki J Lehtovaara mainitsee joen pituudeksi 200 metriä.
Kirjassa “Suomen luonnon ihmeitä”, 2001, Risto Lounema 2001 mainitsee joen pituudeksi yli 100 metriä.
Paikka on vierailemisen arvoinen, mutta valmistaudu nopeasti vaihtelevaan säähän, puhelimen kuulumattomuuteen ja vaativaan maastoon. Voit tulla tai mennä Toskaljärvelle etelästä, Meekonjärveltä (siellä on autiotupa) kahden kahlauspaikan yli kohtuullisen helppoa maastoa. Toinen kahlaus on kuivempaan aikaan lähes täysin kuiva. Pihtsusjärven (myös autiotupa pohjoispäässä) eteläpäästä matkalla on rinteitä ja melkoista kivikkoa (rakkaa), jossa hyvä reitinvalinta on tärkeätä. Hyvällä säällä reipas kävelijä taivaltaa reitin Meekonjärvi – Toskaljärvi – Pihtsusjärvi päivässä. Tietenkin voi kysyä myös lentokone- tai helikopteripalveluja.
Tehtäväsi on löytää
- koordinaatit, joissa joki menee maan alle
- koordinaatit, joissa joki tulee päivänvaloon
- maanalaisen joen suora pituus koordinaattien avulla
- ylivuoto-uoman ja maanalaisen joen välinen kulma. Voit löytää uoman, vaikka se olisi kuiva.
