This is the 8th in a series called Hidden Columbia. The point of these caches are to point out places and things that you might not have known about.
It started in 1761...that is when the Colonial Government of South Carolina, worried about the rising black population in the State, offered 4 pounds of Sterling for every white person brought into the State. What resulted from the law was a new slave trade in Irish immigrants. (These immigrants were often treated worse than black slaves on their voyage to America.)
In 1820, more Irish were brought to Columbia to build what is known to us today as the Columbia Canal. There is a monument to those Irish that helped build the canal in Riverfront Park. It is a stone monument made the Irish and is made out of some of the remains of the old CCC Prison that was next to the park. (Reference point below)
Those immigrants who helped build the canal then formed a small community that what would become known as "New Dublin". The location of that community is in the area of this geocache. At its high point, the Irish community in Columbia made up 10% of the population. Some of the original members of that community are buried in Columbia at Saint Peter's Catholic Church on Assembly St. (Reference point below)
