Geocache Description:

The location of this cache is on a family farm. This is a 4H project. This cache tells about the history of apple orchards around the Shubert area. The cache has 4H and apple items. Wires have been removed from cache area.

When you look around this cache now, you will see corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay. There are also beef and dairy cattle. This area was full of apple orchards from 1869 to 1940. The apples were picked by hand. The apple pickers were paid 4¢ per bushel. They put the apples in barrels and then put the barrels on cars or trucks and took them to the town of Shubert. From Shubert the apples were sent by railroad to Omaha and Chicago. The Shubert Brothers Orchard Company was the largest around Shubert. Why are all the apple trees gone? The “Apple Tree Freeze” happened on November 11, 1940. That year there had been a mild fall but on Nov. 11 there were 3-4” of snow and ice and it was -2° F. This caused 90% of the apple trees to die because the sap froze and split the bark.
