Geocache Description:

I have taken the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Trail to make it the Warriors and Brothers in Arms Trail.  I hope to provide a little education,  fun, challenge, and just maybe an appreciation for the generations of Americans who put their lives on the line so that we may enjoy our freedoms – to include Geocaching. These vignettes are not comprehensive histories – all factual errors are mine. If you find an error, contact me so that I can fix it.

From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia; all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere – Winston Churchill, 1946

There is perhaps no greater symbol of the Iron Curtain and the Cold War than the Berlin Wall.

The Berlin Wall was a barrier that existed from 1961 through 1989, constructed by the East Germany starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin until it was opened in 1989. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany. In practice, the Wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that marked East Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period.

The two world super powers faced off for more than 40 years. And though it was not a shooting war, the risks were very real and there were Soldiers who accepted those risks.
