Not all wave-chasers will agree with that, but they will all agree Surf Highway 45 definitely leads to some of the best surf in NZ as the changing angle-of-impact of the coastline to wind and swell virtually guarantees that there will be some enticing breaks located somewhere along the drive.
Known to Kiwi surfers as 'The Legend', Stent Road is one of New Zealand’s undisputed surfing hot spots. Heavy swells pound this boulder-strewn bay from most directions, creating consistently good surf and a superb right-hander that breaks over a shallow reef. Unfortunately, Stent Road can get really crowded, hence why other Taranaki coastal breaks are more popular with the locals.
You don't however, have to be a board-rider to enjoy the Surf Highway. The beauty of the drive, with its ever changing scenery in the shadow of the mountain, is something that everyone can enjoy - as well as a number of geocaches - including two at Cape Egmont lighthouse, arguably a better surfing spot than Stent Road.
Such is the popularity of this surf spot that the road sign was being constantly pinched. This has now been alleviated by a humongous rock painted 'STENT ROAD'.
The cache is a small sistema, under a large rock, next to a flax bush - don't fret, I dislike harakeke hides too! It would probably pay to bring your own writing stick
