DO NOT OPEN THE PHONE BOX! THE CACHE IS NOT INSIDE THE BOX!!!
The ninth of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County - beginning in West Routt during the summer of 2016!
COW CREEK SCHOOL – Hilton Gulch District #26 – Established in 1893. “Cow Creek was named by an early settler who found a lost cow with a new calf somewhere along the creek. The earliest mention of a log school at Cow Creek is in 1903, but there may have been an earlier school. In 1911 a frame school with a two-room teacherage was built on the same site at 28325 County Road 43. Although it closed around 1936, it reopened during World War II for a few years. It shared half terms with the Hilton Gulch School in order to minimize the distance some children had to travel. The white frame building, now red, served as a community center but currently appears to be abandoned.” (Windows to Yesterday; Routt County, Rural Schools 1883-1960, Leslie, 1998, p.59)
The Cow Creek School holds a special place in my heart since my great grandad Dorr played the piano for many a school dance here. It’s always been a place I’ve heard spoke of with many, many fond memories! Sure wish it had a use now and wasn’t just sitting empty!
