El puente romano de Mérida es considerado el más largo de la antigüedad. En los tiempos del Imperio Romano la obra se elevaba sobre el río Guadiana a lo largo de dos tramos separados por un tajamar.
The Roman bridge of Mérida is considered the longest of antiquity. In the times of the Roman Empire the building was elevated on the Guadiana River along two sections separated by a mole.
El puente mide en la actualidad 792 m con 60 arcos y tiene 12 m de altura sobre el nivel medio del agua. Su perfil actual ligeramente giboso no era así en origen, pues es resultado de las sucesivas destrucciones y reconstrucciones, así como del hundimiento del lecho fluvial en los dos últimos milenios. Pese a todo, sigue siendo una magna obra que atestigua la ambición de la ingeniería romana. El puente soportó el paso del tráfico rodado durante casi toda su historia, pero pasó a ser exclusivamente peatonal el 10 de diciembre de 1991, día en que se inauguró el puente Lusitania (donde hay otro caché).
The bridge currently measures 792 m with 60 arches and is 12 m high above the average water level. Its current slightly gibbous profile was not so in origin, as it is the result of successive destructions and reconstructions, as well as the sinking of the fluvial bed in the last two millennia. In spite of everything, it is still a great work that testifies to the ambition of Roman engineering.The bridge withstood the passage of road traffic for almost all its history, but became exclusively pedestrian on December 10, 1991, the day it was inaugurated the Lusitania bridge (where there is another cache).
