Geocache Description:

Church Micro - St Mary and The Holy Cross

This new multi replaces the prior church micro here which was archived in 2015, for anyone who felt that this area seemed familiar.

Some Background:

Formerly dubbed "The Exaltation of the Cross", this church begun construction in the 12th century and was eventually completed in the 15th. Due to this, there's evidence of a Saxon church on the site which predates the Norman conquest.

The North Transept (or Tylden Chapel) was built at the close of the 12th century, and the Tyldens, of which it takes its name, lived nearby in the Milstead Manor House. The North Transept now marks the legacy of their house name as the last of the Tyldens passed in 1949.

There is not any reference to a crypt, but at the right hand side of the south porch there are stone steps, at the bottom of which is a door that may be the entrance to a crypt/vault, or perhaps some sort of store room beneath the porch.

In addition, a weather vane was added in 1779 which now has a bullet hole in it, made by one of the Tyldens, shooting with a rook rifle for a bet, from the gardens of the Manor House in the early 20th century.

The Tylden vault can be found within the church, however visiting it isn't necessary for the coordinates as the churches is often locked.

To gather the required numbers you will firstly have to visit the main entrance of the church and locate the stained-glass windows on the wall to the left. You will only have to focus on the left-most window of the two.

Number of petals on a singular greyish-blue flower = A
Number of birds = B

Now search for the drain attachment around the back of the church.

Date on the drain = 19CD

Lastly, count the number of doors fixed to the outside of the church (porch is 2).

Total number of doors = E

The cache can be found at:

N 51 17.(D+E) B (C-A)
E 000 43.(D-B) (A-D) (A-E)

These coordinates will take you on a pleasant stroll along a footpath to ground zero approximately 700m away.
