Geocache Description:

The Salvatorians arrived at the diocese Timisoara in 1898. Shortly after they build a religious house and a parish hall in the Mehala District near an already existing church. This Hall was an important meeting place, but also for excercises and talks - the so called "Corona" -  especially during the communist oppression.

The Monastry was then build in an neo-gothic style between 1909 and 1919 in the Timisoaran "Elisabetin" part of town. Its is entirely financed by Bishop Dessewffy, who was promising all his financial wealth for this project if the Salvatorians would accept to take the parrish.

When the communists took power in Romania, the Salvatorians had to leave the premises, but managed to continue their pastoral care. After the fall of the communistic regime in 1989 there where immediate attempts to get back the Monastry in Elisabetin to rebuild the community. In 1992 the Salvatorians finally got back the Monastry from the state.

Nowadays the Salvatorian Monastry supports a lot of important projects in social context, such as night-asylum for the homeless, lunch supply for the poor, a house for women in need an the youth farm for reintegration of young homeless into society.

If you have the chance, i highly recomment you to visit the inside of the Monastry with its rich decor, but also for a good talk to some very nice people of the Salvatorian Parish.
