Beautiful old community on the Ellis County backroads.
This is such a scenic location that it has been used in movies such as "Places in the Heart" starring Sally Field. When the superconducting supercollider was being built it was supposed to come right under here. The town would have been bulldozed, but due to public outcry they moved the collider just enough to avoid the town.
I have family ties to this area. My great aunt is buried in the cemetery across the street. My grandmother said the service was early in the morning so they had the church windows open to provide a breeze. Then the entire crowd then walked to the cemetery across the street. A friend was also married here because they wanted a quaint country church.
There are two historical markers here so I decided to ask two questions. When was the first meetinghouse built? And, at the cemetery who is buried in the earliest known grave?
