[EN] Saint Martin the bishop’s church in Martincek

Not until recently, the Roman Catholic church of Saint Martin the bishop in Martincek was only the one of several early Gothic churches in Slovakia. Recent discovery (1999) of valuable fresco paintings dated back to 1300 places this church among one of the most substantial Slovak early Gothic remains. It is possible to determine its age quite accurately, according to the registry of church property it was already built in 1260. This church was built with high possibility by Benedictines or Templars.

The legend about Templars

Templar’s activity in this region is bind to the interesting legend according to which the Templar’s monastery was built on the nearby The Mount Mnich. In 1230 this monastery was supposed to be visited by Templar Johann Gottfried de Herberstain from Steiermark. As he was traveling, he noticed treders as the were attacked by the robbers. He decided to help them with a small group of knights. He died in the struggle against their predominance.

According to the legend, he was supposed to be buried in the nearest stone church, All Saint’s church located in Kuty (GC12RT1). However, arecheological investigation of Templar’s presence didn’t confirm this presumption.

[SK] Kostol sv. Martina biskupa v Martinceku
