Oak 13- The old Gate Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Tangled two: Sad to say I have collected the cache in today. Sorry to disappoint anyone but not able to maintain this loop anymore because of a job change and location. There will be another series next year in the area to replace. And for the time being my Chulmleigh loop will remain.

Geocache Description:

BURRINGTON, a pleasant village, 4 miles N.W. by W. of Chulmleigh, has in its parish 5330 acres of land, including Halsbury, Callard, Northcote, and other scattered farms.

The oak tree that stands in the village square is to be about 500 years old, recent major surgery has given the tree a new lease of life. A pottery plaque designed and made by local potter, commemorating the centenary of the Parish Council and bearing a picture of the oak tree, is displayed in the porch of the Parish Hall.

Burrington is roughly 540 ft above sea level and situated about a mile to the west of the beautiful Taw valley - "Tarka Country", in North Devon. It is a quiet village and for those who love the outdoors this is the place to be - we are surrounded by it - to the north is Exmoor, to the south is Dartmoor. This is a long walk around country lanes, footpaths and bridleways with views of the moors and the Taw valley. This walk takes you through the village Copps and the woods. Unfortunately there are parts of this walk where it can be very muddy even in dry weather. You may have to negotiate 2 small streams.

This is a series of 35 caches round odd shaped route plus the opportunity to do Alphabet Chain F is For My Bride at Forches Cross GC1FFJT.

Distance: approx. 8 miles. But can be broken down into section of 2 or even 3 for shorter routes. Email me for further details.

There are Benches on route. One at no 19 and the other between 21-22.

There are missing public footpath signs between 30 and 32 so please take a map.

You may be lucky enough to meet sheep, peacocks and even a field of Alpacas.

There are 2 stiles which are dog friendly, 20 gates, and 2 small bridges.

Free parking is at the village hall or the village square which is where the oak tree stands.

Parts of this walk is not suitable for Bicycles or buggies

Strong footwear advisable.

For some of the smaller caches you will need a pen/pencil

Cache is a 2.5x 2.5 Tupperware box with a log book inside.
