From Frostburg, the Maryland trail enters the
945 ft. long Borden tunnel then eases along a gentle railroad
grade that averages 1.5% with very few steep climbs up to the
eastern face of Savage Mountain. At the Mason-Dixon line,
about 4 miles from Big Savage Mountain tunnel, bikers and
hikers are greeted by a spectacular view of their route from
the 2250 ft. elevation. Elevation at the top of Big Savage
Tunnel can be found by searching the page of neighboring cache
All Downhill From Here. Passage through both
tunnels is an amazing event. Praise to the Allegheny Trail
Alliance and Ontario based contractor Advanced Construction
Techniques for re-creating this spectacular structure, surely
one of the trail's most impressive showpieces.
The Allegheny Highlands Trail in Maryland, when completed, will
link the C&O Canal Trail from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland,
MD, through western Maryland and Frostburg to a series of
hiking/biking trails in Pennsylvania, resulting in a continuous
trail of almost 400 miles from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh.
