Cache #3 in the Delta Blues Series.
"Strange Things Happen" is a song recorded by The Beach Boys
(Yuck). But it is also a different song recorded by Lazy
Lester.
Lazy Lester was born Leslie Johnson in Louisiana in 1933. Lester
is a swamp blues harmonica player, whose career spans the 1950s to
the 2000s. His songs have been covered by (among others) The Kinks,
Freddy Fender, Dwight Yoakam, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Lester's career took off in the late 1950's when the scheduled
harmonica player did not appear for a recording session. Lester
volunteered to play the harmonica. Lester's work on that first
Lightnin' Slim session led to a successful solo career. Lester was
also used as a multi-instrumentalist on percussion, guitar, bass,
and harmonica on many other sessions.
One of the interesting things about Lazy Lester was his
improvisation skills at making ordinary items into musical
instruments. To Lester, percussion went beyond the traditional drum
kit, and included anything that would produce the sound he wanted,
such as a rolled-up newspaper on a cardboard box.
In September 2002, a Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded by
the Boston Blues Society.
Lester is currently rockin' at the age of 75 in Paradise,
California with his partner.
This is a straightforward cache with a wonderful view. Be sure
to look in the gallery at the picture I took Sunday afternoon while
placing the cache. You can park within 50 or 60 feet of the cache.
I made sure to place it out of view of the nearby home. With all
the development going on this neighborhood this site may be short
lived, so enjoy it while you can.
