Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the northern end of Sampson State Park. This is our 2nd cache in this park. This one will take you to another lost area of the park that once served as an Navy and Air Force Training base. Special gift for the FTF! Enjoy!

You are looking for a large ammo can. This cache is our second placed in Sampson State Park. The cache was placed with the help of our sons Evan and Luke and their friend Gino (hence the name ELG). We camp at this park at least twice a year and it is probably our favorite campground. Not just for the natural beauty of the area, but for its rich military history.
We saw the need for another cache in the park and searched around a bit until we found this interesting little site. We located it on the map, then stopped in of the Navy/Air Force Museum located in the old brig (jail) upon the park property. I pointed out the spot on the map to one of the volunteer veterans at the museum and he told me this was where the NCO Club was located when the base was thriving. Please visit this museum and you will be blown away to learn what this area was turned into at the beginning of WWII. Truely a interesting piece of history. This cash is located in the area that was the entrance to the NCO Club parking lot. An NCO means, Non-Commisioned Officer for those who don't know.
Special thanks to Park Manager Tom for his help. Tom encourages caching within his park and is always eager to help you placing a cache. We wish more new caches would be placed in the park, and so does Tom.
THIS CACHE IS PLACED IN HONOR AND MEMORY OF ALL VETERANS WHO TRAINED AT THIS LOCATION AND FOR THEIR SERVICE AND SACRAFICE FOR OUR GREAT COUNTRY.
NYS Park Permit #SMP-12
