Geocache Description:

This is the fourth of four ''Railway Children'' caches.
No climbing involved!! Plenty of roadside parking. Can be muddy, not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Please KEEP to the footpaths as the land around is private and climbing up or coming down the path on the embankment can be dangerous, and it is NOT a public footpath.

Recommended starting point : N52 04.444 : E000 26.878.

Your GPS reading will be confusing but will make sense when you come to the fork in the path.

Haverhill had two railway stations, the GER (Stour Valley) was called Haverhill North and the CVHR (Colne Valley & Halstead Railway) later to become part of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) was called Haverhill South.
In 1856 the viaduct provided a connection with both railways, even though the two companies were completely independent until 1923 when the CVHR become part of the LNER.

In 1924 Haverhill South was closed to passengers but remained open to freight until 1965. The main CV line remained open until the last train for passengers left Marks Tey at 7.15pm on 31 December 1961 for Haverhill.

The freight traffic ended in 1964 and the line was demolished a year later and so the viaduct became redundant.

The location of Haverhill South was south of Duddery Hill at OS Grid reference TL673450.

The Haverhill North station which finally closed on 6 March 1967, was located on the east side of Wratting Road on the site now being developed by Tesco. OS Grid Ref : TL673458.

The B&W photo is a view of the viaduct in old days and the colour as it is now.
