This geocache is part of the Discovering Places “Culture Caching” project. The project features 5 new geocaches that have been hidden around the UK in locations related to the 1908, 1948, and 2012 Olympic Games.

Discovering Places is the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad campaign to inspire the UK to discover their local built, historic and natural environments.

It is delivered on behalf of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games by The Heritage Alliance.

Please note, this cache will not be accessible on Thursday, 26th July due to other activities on this site.

The White City Stadium is recognized as the first Olympic stadiums in the UK. Originally built for the 1908 Summer Olympics, the stadium was home to the archery, athletics, cycling (track), diving, field hockey, football, gymnastics, lacrosse, rugby union, swimming, tug of war, water polo, and wrestling competitions. The stadium was also the finish line of the marathon, which began at Windsor Castle.

We encourage you to visit the nearby 1908 Olympics memorial. Look for the text on the ground that marks the finish line of the 1908 marathon (see waypoint for coords).

Italy’s Dorando Pietri crossing the finish line of the 1908 marathon.

Although Pietri was the first to cross the finish line, he collapsed 5 times inside the stadium and officials helped him finish the race. He was later disqualified. American Johnny Hayes was awarded the gold medal.
