Please do not remove him or the tube holding the log, just pop open the lid, and take out the log

Bricks But No Mortar is a small cache but is no longer big enough for TBs.

The location of the cache is along the pathways already in place, and has been given kind permission from the land owners.

The site that this cache is located has been designated as a nature reserve, and used to be the site of large brickwork factories owned by Eastwoods who were established around 1813.

The first brickworks that Eastwoods built at Conyer was the Butterfly Brickworks in 1885. There were two theories as to why this works was called Butterfly. One is that the flues from the driers had butterfly-shaped dampers, and the other is for the beautiful butterflies that abound in the area. Many men used to catch them and mount them in sets as a hobby.

The local clay dug from around Teynham added with small amounts of chalk plus the mud from the Swale created the bricks and gave them an attractive yellow colouring, many of which can be found buried in the ground around the works. The bricks were transported up the Swale and into the Thames to make their way to London and can be seen in London buildings as well as in local Teynham houses.

Now as the location is a nature reserve there are more than just butterflies around the works. Rabbits live around the area as well as birds out along the Swale, and very ocassionally you might get to see a seal out on the muds.
