Geocache Description:

The Assiniboine Delta was formed when a glacial river carried sand and silt across the Prairies, then dropped it here as it spilled into ancient Lake Agassiz.

The Pembina and Tiger Hills are good examples of end moraines. End or terminal moraines are formed at the leading or retreating edge of a glacier. The glacier acts as a conveyor belt depositing debris from the top of the glacier before it. The size of the end moraine is dependent on whether the glacier is advancing, retreating or stationary. The longer a glacier stays in one place, the higher the pile of debris will be.

As a glacier melts, it forms a fast moving glacial river which carries a lot of sand, silt and other debris suspended in it. A delta, like this one, is formed when the river meets another body of water causing the forward motion of the river to slow and allowing the particles carried by the river to precipitate and drop to the bottom. The size of the delta depends on the size of the river and the amount of debris that was suspended in it.
