In the 70’s if you were to drive north of Elizabethtown on US 31W (Dixie Hwy) you would come to a large discount store that at the time was known as Kuhn's - Big K, not to be confused with K-mart's Big K stores. The store was located on a large plot of land and it had a Ponderosa Steak House and a Moby Dicks located in the out lots adjacent to the store. At the time the store was the biggest discount store in Elizabethtown. The store was so far out of town that it did not draw many people and soon the big cavernous store was half empty.
Towards the end of the 70’s the store was bought by a new and ever expanding newcomer from out of town Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart would fully stock the store and a strip mall would be added to the property as well as a new Kroger store. A small outdoor mall courtyard was added with small stores placed around the courtyard flanked on both sides by a large piece of prefab concrete that seemed out of place. This proved to be a bad design because of the visibility from the street. Kroger would eventually pull out and locate near the Towne Mall to be replaced by a furniture store, the Moby Dick would close and the store turned into a bank. The Ponderosa would close down and become a Mexican restaurant and like in so many other towns the Wal-Mart would move into a Suppercenter a mile further out of town. The Peddlers Mall is the current tenate of the main store in what is now called Lake Shore Plaza. It’s ironic but the town that this center used to be too far from now extends a good 3 miles past it.
