Few picnickers carry their basket this far which is a shame because the tables around GZ are a great place for a picnic on a sunny summer afternoon.
Maligne is the largest glacial fed lake in the Canadian Rockies and the water is understandably cold. While I have never had the desire to swim in the lake I see brave souls doing just that every summer. Brrrrr. I prefer setting out on any of the half-dozen hiking trails in the area. From easy forest strolls, such as the Mary Schafer Loop you’ll be using to reach this cache, to steep alpine ascents of the Bald or Opal Hills. Click here for trail details.
There are boat rentals (canoes, kayaks and row boats) and cruises to world famous Spirit Island. Feel free to bring your own boat but be aware that gasoline powered motors are not permitted on the lake. Fishers, the people not the animal, may try their luck for the lake’s non-native rainbow and brook trout, with a national park fishing permit. Yumm.
In accordance with Parks Canada’s geocaching regulations no trading items or trackables may be left in this cache.
