During 1928 the Canadian National
Railroad brought a line through Crooked River, Bjorkdale, Steen, and Chelan.
Many local men worked with the railway gang either with pick and shovel, axes,
sledge hammers, railroad jacks, frisnels, oxen or teams of horses. One can
barely imagine the feeling of accomplishment of these hardy pioneers and their
visions of a better future as the first train rumbled through their settlement
with shipments of their products. This was a primary lifeline for grain farmers
in the region for approximately 72 years.
The line carried grain, lumber,
clay bricks (made just west of Crooked River), and many other things during
it's history.
There are stories during the prohibition
in the 30's how whisky was brought in by the train, and wartime stories of
local AWL solders and their hideout along this line.
The line was pulled out by the CN in 2000.
