The Ringbearer slowly crawled up the unforgiving slope, with the howling in his mind and weariness from his quest making every inch of progress a new ordeal. The crest of Mount Doom neared, and the Dark Lord sensed his presence and turned his whole mind and purpose and Power upon the frail little figure. No army of Light would come from the South to aid Frodo now, and any hope of help from the East had faded as his companions fell one by one.
The Nazgul flew toward him from the North. The Ur-Lords knew Frodo neared his end.
But Frodo’s will fought back as he slipped the Ring on his finger and drew courage from Gandalf’s promise of aid from the West. Calling quietly, “I am completed, Destroyer, undone.”
Eons have passed, but Mount Doom still stands. The Ents are silent witnesses to those brave sacrifices of long ago.
