Turf Hill II Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

juliadream: This cache has been in place for five years, and replaced an earlier cache which was one of the original caches in the New Forest. We have decided to archive it as much of the area is also covered by our recent Hale Purlieu cache GC42AN8.
Turf Hill II has also been used as a BookCrossing location, but that is now better served by Lover Phone Box GC425EZ.
Closing this cache with some regrets, but many thanks to all who have visited and recorded their experience in the logs.

Geocache Description:

The initial location is a Forestry Commission Car park (Turf Hill) on the B3080 towards the NW corner of the New Forest. From J1 of the M27, follow the road signs towards Downton, and when you leave the New Forest, you have gone too far. The cache is about 1km from the car park and access is via hard gravel tracks.

This cache replaces an earlier Turf Hill cache which was lost when the programme of reverting this area to open heath land commenced. Although the work is not complete, the uncertainty of funding and schedules has encouraged us to replace the cache in the hope that we have found a spot where it will not be disturbed. In the winter of 2007/2008 the cache had to be moved a few metres during a further phase of restoration.

During World War II, this area was known as ARD Millersford and many of the burial mounds or tumulii on the OS map are probably the bulldozed remains of the bomb-proof laboratories in which explosives research was carried out. The presence of bricks indicates a fairly modern "tumulii"! In the 1950s the area was deep-ploughed and planted with a selection of conifers.

Now the area is being encouraged to revert to open heath land, being an increasingly rare European habitat the New Forest National Park Authority wish to enlarge. However, a few remaining violets and bluebells that struggle on show that much of this area, particularly the hollows, was ancient woodland.

The co-ordinates are for the Turf Hill Car Park. This is very popular with the local dog-walkers, so watch where you step! The Information Post with the Forestry Commission Byelaws on its side provides the clues to the cache location. Find the appropriate paragraph numbers.

The cache, a 3 litre plastic box, has been placed under the agreement between the New Forest Forestry Commission and the Geocaching Association of Great Britain.
