Geocache Description:

LNT

The Center for Outdoor Ethics views geocaching as a fun and worthwhile recreational pursuit when done in accordance with land management agency regulations and with Leave No Trace in mind. As the popularity of geocaching has exploded over the past few years, land managers in many areas are seeing more impacts related to geocaching. However, because of geocaching, more and more people are enjoying the outdoors. As responsible geocachers, we have an obligation to tread gingerly on the land and adhere to the Leave No Trace Principles.

Principle 1: Plan Ahead and Prepare;
Adequate trip planning and preparation helps geocachers accomplish trip goals safely and enjoyably, while simultaneously minimizing damage to the land. Poor planning often results in miserable cachers and damage to natural and cultural resources

  • Know and comply with the geocaching policies of the land owners or land management agencies where you wish to seek or place caches.
  • Prepare for your trip with proper equipment and clothing for the weather, terrain and environmental conditions, and for emergencies.
  • Be safe. Let someone know where you will be going and when you expect to return.
  • Know how to use your GPS. Carry extra batteries, a map and compass as backup.

Seven elements to consider when planning a caching trip:
  • Identify and record the goals (expectations) of your trip.
  • Identify the skill and ability of your fellow cachers..
  • Select destinations that match your goals, skills, and abilities.
  • Gain knowledge of the area you plan to visit from land managers, maps, and literature..
  • Choose equipment and clothing for comfort, safety, and Leave No Trace qualities..
  • Plan trip activities to match your goals, skills, and abilities.
  • Evaluate your trip upon return note changes you will make next time..
