Birthplace of the Martini... or is it??
Formerly a virtual, then a micro near the plaque, and now a virtual once more (and for all).
James Bond may have been onto this drink long ago, but they seem to be experiencing a "revival" of sorts (fueled by the switch from gin to vodka, me thinks - but I'm not a fan).
Some trivial research shows that the facts are far from conclusive in this, one of Martinez' few "claims to fame" (along with John Muir and Joe DiMaggio). At least one version of the story (the one told at these coordinates) has a Martinez barkeep whipping up the first martini in exchange for miner's gold.
Whether you believe the first one was poured here, in San Francisco, or even Manhattan - you'll need information from the plaque at the coordinates above for the context of this cache.
To confirm your find - please email me the following answers:
- ) The year the first martini was poured (at this site ;-)
- ) The original, full name of the drink
- ) The humorist who wrote the quote:
"One is alright, two is too many, and three is not enough."
- ) The organization and chapter who dedicated this monument
Extra Credit for posting a photo of you and your GPSr at the location, and/or mentioning your favorite Bond villain, heroine, or foe.
