Geocache Description:

The 36th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

Hahn’s Peak’s first school was built here in 1911 although school was held in various empty cabins throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s.  The building was originally green but was painted white during most of it’s time as a school.   The school operated until the 1940-41 term.   At this time, most students lived closer to the present site of Steamboat Lake at there were concerns of students having to ski too far.   Consequently a “portable” school was built on skids.   It was a 12’ x 24’ two-room structure covered in tar paper with a green asphalt roof.  The front room was the schoolroom, the back room was a teacherage.  It was towed by a horse team or truck and used until the early 1950s when the district was no longer needed.

The Hahns Peak Schoolhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic places in 1974 but to qualify for this designation, the building had to be repainted it’s original green.  The building is currently part of the Hahn’s Peak Historic district and houses part of the museum which is open during the summer months.
