(Still) Wishing On A Tree
Fong Ma Po village is home of the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree, which is said to make your wishes come true. As many people would like to have their wishes come true, it is a popular destination for believers, especially around Chinese New Year.
The area also has a Tin Hau temple and an ecology education centre. The public toilet also deserves special mentioning, as it's actually a pretty good looking one, both inside and out.
The original practice was to tie wishes to an orange, and throw them in the branches of the tree. However all the rotting fruit plus the sheer weight of it caused the tree to falter, and on Chinese New Year 2005 a large branch broke off. No-one was injured, and it was seen as the tree telling the worshippers, "Enough is enough", and the practice was stopped.
Now wishes are to be attached to wooden boards, but the original practice has been revived, in a way, as is is now possible to attach your wish to a fake orange and throw them in the branches of a fake tree.
