Geocache Description:

The cache is located near Monkey temple (Galwar Bagh), a beautiful temple complex and pilgrimage site located on the outskirts of town. The waters here are considered holy, as they have a spiritual connection with the Ganges River. Galwar Bagh is a lovely place to escape thick tourist crowds, see exceptional architecture, and, of course, visit with a multitude of playful monkeys. Around the temple you can find beautiful layered rocks, that are very interesting from geological point of view too.

The Rock layers are formed by Quartz Sandstone. Quartz sandstone is sedimentary rock similar to sandstone but particles are mostly quartz. Quartz is the hardest and the most resistant mineral from all rock-forming minerals.

Quartz sandstone is formed as a result of the extreme weathering and sorting of a sediment until everything that can be removed has been removed. The high content of quartz is a result of removal of feldspar and lithic particles. This is done by the complete chemical weathering. Tidal sand bars that accumulate large bodies of quartz sand is yet another situation that leads to formation of sandstone. Quartz sandstone layers are very hard and not easily bending. It means that during folding the quartz sandstone layer is not bending but rather fracturing.

On the ground zero you will see layered rock from brown-red Quartz sandstone. Look down to the temples and than to the rock by your left hand. To prove your visit you have to answer several questions about it and send me answers via my profile.

1) try to estimate the inclination of layers
2) the layers are very regular – try to estimate the average thickness.
3) if you look up (about 10m), you will see that the upper layers are different. Write me what differences you can see.

Send me your answers via e-mail through my GC profile before logging and I will validate your found.
