The University Bay, by Lake Mendota, has been a regular stop for outdoor enthusiasts and recreational sports players. It provides a great expanse of space to flex your navigation muscle. The "U Bay Cache" was designed to be technically challenging, but not physically strenuous. Your grey matter should be the only thing sore at the end of the hunt!
We have grown to love the time we have spent with others while hunting caches. The "U Bay Cache" was meant to promote a team effort. You will need a worthy hunting partner, or other group, to complete the tasks. If you've got skills....YES....it can be completed by a single person.
There are at least four specific land navigation skills required for success. Bring pencil, paper, and compass. You might find two-way radios handy if you have them. Good luck!
Waypoint EP1 - N43 05.019 W89 25.758. Without these coordinates, finding your starting point would be a monumental task. Parking should be other than squarely obvious.
Using the available hard data, write down the year of a once golden time, place the letters A,B,C,D above the year from left to right.
Waypoint EP2 - N43 05.011 W89 25.923. No tricks here, these coordinates will steer you on the right path. Finding this one provides the platform for finding a future point of interest. Note the year of this location's prominent feature and place the letters E,F,G,H above the year from left to right.
Things have been easy so far so you shouldn't be close to weeping just yet. Complete Waypoint EP3's coordinate and proceed to it's location.
Waypoint EP3 - N43 04. B,(A+C),D W89 26.001 This is where things get fun. Take a moment to check your numbers as an error at this point would surely lead you astray. Next, calculate EP4. Knock on wood that you have them both correct.
Waypoint EP4 - N43 04. F,44 W89 26.(E+G),(E-G),E. Now it's time to go your seperate ways. One of you will have to hop up and kick your heels on over to Waypoint EP4 while the other stays behind. Once you occupy both EP3 AND EP4 you are ready to find EP5.
Waypoint EP5 - Ahh the great mystery! No coordinates are available for you! EP5 lies at a point where you and your partner(s) will once again meet. Rest assured, walking the straight and narrow will keep you on track. From EP3 proceed on an azimuth of 200 degrees True. From EP4 your partner must head out on an azimuth of 133 degrees True. Where your two paths cross marks the spot!
Waypoint EP6 - The Final Cache - By now some will feel they've been crossed, but stay in the game to the final cache and not on the sidelines. From your location, proceed on an azimuth of B,(A-E) degrees True for a distance of (H-A),(D-E),H feet. Your prize awaits!! Don't be afraid to look back at all of the fun you've just had, it holds the secret to your success!
Well, that completes the University Bay Cache! Let us know how things went! Take a moment to log your visit and take a picture of the gang. The original contents of the cache include: sunglasses, emergency scissors, green exercise band, braided bracelet, eyeglass strap, turquois ring and mosquito headnet.
