Glenmore Birth Place Forest - Calgary Parks 100 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

mrcanoehead224: I stopped by tonight to check on this one. As I expected, the landscape has changed drastically.

The cache was once 20 metres from the water and by my best estimation, the bank of the river is now 10 metres past that.

Perhaps in the future I will look at placing another cache nearby.

Geocache Description:

Celebrating Calgary Parks 100th Anniversary!

The Glenmmore BirthPlace Forest is accessed from the 13 St SE past the Lafarge plant, Burnco and RCGA. See parking coordinates below. The drive in gate will be locked but feel free to use the small walk through gate on the left.

For your safety please use the directions provided, do not pull directly off Deerfoot!

The BirthPlace Forests were planted between 2001 and 2009 in different parts of the city. Each tree planted annually represents the children born in Calgary that year.

When I was placing the cache, I had my 8 year old daughter with me and I was explaining that each tree there represents one new person. She thought that was a lot of babies. Also on our walk, we saw a mama Killdeer trying to protect her nest from us by pretending to be injured and drawing us away from the nest. Then shortly after, we saw a hawk fly overhead with a fish dinner.

This is not a traditional park in my opinion but the two times I have visited so far, I have seen a variety of wildlife (deer and rabbits the first time) that seem to call it home.

Update Jan 20/12: This forest seems to have been renamed to Heritage Grove and the city has updated their webpage for information on access to this park, last week I noticed there was a new gate which no longer requires a person to crawl through.
from the City's page: Note: Access to this forest is temporary and along the Province's Deerfoot Trail road allowance. The gate is kept locked unless Parks workers are onsite to prevent vehicles entering the site to inhibit vandalism and unauthorized dumping. An informal pedestrian gate (opening in the fence) has been made north of the locked gate. Permanent access will be a pathway along the river's edge that is yet to be built and date is unknown.
