The BirthPlace Forests were planted between 2001 and 2009 in
different parts of the city. Each tree planted annually represents
the children born in Calgary that year.
When I was placing the cache, I had my 8 year old daughter with
me and I was explaining that each tree there represents one new
person. She thought that was a lot of babies. Also on our walk, we
saw a mama Killdeer trying to protect her nest from us by
pretending to be injured and drawing us away from the nest. Then
shortly after, we saw a hawk fly overhead with a fish dinner.
This is not a traditional park in my opinion but the two times I
have visited so far, I have seen a variety of wildlife (deer and
rabbits the first time) that seem to call it home.
Update Jan 20/12: This forest seems to have been renamed
to Heritage Grove and the city has updated their webpage for
information on access to this park, last week I noticed there was a
new gate which no longer requires a person to crawl through.
from the City's page: Note: Access to this forest is temporary
and along the Province's Deerfoot Trail road allowance. The gate is
kept locked unless Parks workers are onsite to prevent vehicles
entering the site to inhibit vandalism and unauthorized dumping. An
informal pedestrian gate (opening in the fence) has been made north
of the locked gate. Permanent access will be a pathway along the
river's edge that is yet to be built and date is unknown.
