The Reno Gang, AKA: the Reno Brothers Gang, perpitrators of the Marshfield Train Robbery, was made up of brothers John, Frank, Simon, William, and sundry other desperados. Based in Seymour, the gang ranged throughout southern Indiana and parts of Missouri and Iowa.
The gang is generally credited, among others, with the first three train robberies in the U.S., the Marshfield job being the third, although the second has at times been considered a copy cat crime commited by another gang. Besides robbing trains the gang had an active career in murder, counterfitting, horse theft, arson, and, during the Civil War, bounty jumping and desertion.
The gang did, indeed, end its career dangling from vigilante ropes during the course of three seperate lynchings. The only survivor was John who was serving time in prsion in Missouri at the time.
